Esteros of Iberá is one of the richest and longest
humidities of our planet.
The " esteros " and lagoons of Iberá and the systems
that comprise them represent one of the most outstanding
biological areas of Argentina. This huge system of humidity
with a great diversity of animals and vegetation, constitute
the Natural Patrimony of Corrientes. This is why the
government of Corrientes has created " The Natural Reserve
of Iberá ", in 15th April of 1983, Act 3771), being
the main objective to preserve and keep its natural resources.
Its boundaries are: in the North, the National Route nº 12;
in the East, the division with The Paraná's tributaries
of the Aguapié and Miriñay rivers; in the
West, the division with the esteros, streams and tributaries
of The Paraná River, especially the Batelito; and
in the South, the continuation of the East's division that
separates the tributaries' system from the Miriñay's
right side as well as in the North of Pay Ubre's river.
It stretches, approximately, 13.000 km2, which means the
14,6 % of Corrientes' territory.
The Iberá's system is constituted by a huge mass
of the esteros' vegetation with a great capacity of keeping
water, and the rainfalls contribute between 1200 and 1500
mm per year. That is, the soft vegetation keeps and regulates
the rainwater that falls on its basin. Besides, less than
a quarter of the water received, derives from the Paraná's
river, through the superficial water pipe of the system,
the Corrientes' river. The vegetation is in charged of
the rest of the system: its metabolic transpiration and
the direct evaporation, which is benefited by the relationship
between its huge extension and the lack of depth.
